Decentralization ought to be a condition for the Serbs’ participation at the Kosovo local elections on November 15, says leading Serb official Rada Trajkovic. The chairman of the Serb National Council’s Executive Committee told Beta that Serbia, regardless of the legitimate view that Kosovo was an integral part of the state, should authorize Kosovo Serb representatives to discuss decentralization with the Pristina authorities. "Decentralization as condition for elections" “I don’t think the leadership in Pristina is ready to support the decentralization process. At the same time, the international community is dodging the subject, as, quite simply, they think it’s going to cost quite a bit, as any integration really does cost a lot of money,“ she explained. Trajkovic said that the Serbs should try and gain a foothold in the authorities in Kosovo’s towns. “We should participate through those Serbs that were driven out and give our own representatives in city assemblies like Pristina, Pec, Djakovica and other places where we could put returns forward as an issue,“ she said. “We’re not so stupid as to be unable to defend the interests of our people, who’ve frequently been the subject of manipulation and political games over the last ten years, in a relevant, serious and thorough manner,“ Trajkovic added. Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu yesterday called local elections in the province for November 15.
