News of the appearance of swine flu in Croatia, later denied, sparked confusion in the region, after experts said that the virus was poised to hit Serbia. Croatian Health Minister Darko Milinovic said that the misunderstanding had been caused after a mix-up during blood-sample analysis in a laboratory in London, and that the Croatian case had only contracted an ordinary flu strain. Upon his return to Croatia, he contacted his doctor, who told him to get some bed rest. The news triggered confusion in Serbia, with doctors stating that the virus was now on Serbia’s doorstep. With the misunderstanding now cleared up, Branislav Tiodorovic, a member of the Serbian Health Ministry’s Task Force for Pandemics, told B92 that such lapses occurred, even though, on this occasion, it had come at a particularly awkward moment, creating problems not only in Croatia, but the whole region. “We did devote a lot of attention to those findings, but not too much, as we’re aware that, in Europe, cases that are of a chiefly milder form predominate, even when it comes to the swine flu itself,“ he said. “In any case, we expect that it could appear here at any moment. In view of the fact that Greece, Romania, Austria, Italy and other countries have confirmed cases, it’s unlikely that other states in the Balkans will be spared,“ said Tiodorovic.
