The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a swine flu pandemic, and experts believe that the flu could reach Serbia in the fall or winter. This is the first time the WHO has declared a pandemic in over 40 years. Flu warnings are at the highest level—level six—which means that the flu has spread to at least two different regions in the world. "Swine flu expected in fall" Predrag Kon, head of the task force for combating swine flu, told B92 that the most at-risk region was South America, adding that the flu was not expected in Serbia until the fall or winter. He said that just ecause a pandemic had been declared, it did not mean that the illness was very serious or would lead to many deaths, but that it had spread worldwide and infected a large number of people. One factor in the decision to declare it a level-six pandemic is that in the south hemisphere, the new flu spreads like a regular seasonal fu. WHO warns though that swine flu is full of surprises. “We are now in the first days of the pandemic. The virus is spreading but we are following it closely and constantly. No previous pandemic was caught this early and followed so closely from the outset,” Margaret Chan of the WHO stated. No cases had yet been recorded in Serbia, Kon reiterated. The WHO has already stated that it does not want to take drastic measures such as shutting down borders and limiting travel, because that, as Kon said, was not necessary or helpful just now. The virus was first uncovered in Mexico, and according to official reports, some 74 countries have registered 28,000 cases, including 141 deaths.
