The Serb Progressives (SNS) have won in both Zemun and Vozdovac, deputy party leader Aleksandar Vucic has announced. Vucic told a news conference on Monday that in the Belgrade municipality of Vozdovac, the SNS took 29.81 percent of votes, followed by a DS-led coalition with 29.25 percent. SNS take most votes in Belgrade According to him the party will not make any decisions on possible post-election coalitions until its presidency meets on June 15. However, Vucic stressed that "it will not be possible for the Progressives not to capitalize on their victories in Zemun and Vozdovac, and fail to from the local governments". The SNS is an offshoot of the Serb Radicals (SRS), formed last fall. Earlier today, reports said that according to preliminary unofficial results, the Democrats (DS) had won in early local elections in the Belgrade municipality of Vozdovac, and in Kosjeric. The Serb Progressives (SNS) reportedly achieved the same result in Zemun. With a low turnout in Belgrade of some 30 and 36 percent respectively, the DS-led "For a European Vozdovac" was this morning given 29.7 percent, and SNS 29.33 percent of the vote. In Zemun, the SNS has 32.95 percent, followed by the "For a European Zemun" coalition with 27.66 percent, and the Serb Radicals (SRS) with 11.75 percent. The Democratic Party of Serbia and the Socialists (SPS), as well as Rasim Ljajic's "List for Tolerance" will also have councilors. The Liberal Democrats (LDP) did not make it across the five percent threshold in Zemun, but they are confident they will have seats in the local assembly in Vozdovac. SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic said that the party's first elections in Belgrade showed that voters want early parliamentary elections, "and his party in power". "I think it's time for these two blocs to separate, to get constituted. One would have the Democratic Party with their Dinkic forever, the other would have the SNS as the leader of the people's coalition, a very conservative coalition, when it comes to many problems," he was quoted as saying. The Democrats, meanwhile, underperformed, with Belgrade Mayor and city party board head Dragan Djilas stating that the voting was marked by a low turnout, and that coalition talks will now take place. Apart from the SNS, the Socialists appear to have emerged from the elections the most satisfied, with their local officials saying that the party, and the coalition it led, are the only ones to have doubled their tally of votes compared to the previous ballot. The Radicals have lost their dominant position in Zemun, but top party official Dragan Todorovic still believes that early parliamentary elections will be held soon. In Kosjeric, in western Serbia, a high turnout of 67.2 percent was recorded. According to unofficial results, the 27 seats in the local assembly will be divided thus: DS – 8, SNS – 4, DSS – 4, SPS – 4, NS – 4, SPO – 2, while the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) and the Socialists (SPS) did not cross the five percent threshold. Official results will be announced after the voting commissions consider and decide on complaints. Vucic talks to reporters on Monday (FoNet)
