Young people for EU, against NATO

80 percent of young people in Serbia support EU membership, while only 39 percent support joining NATO, according to a recent poll. The Medium Gallup poll, commissioned by the Atlantic Council of Serbia, showed that young people in Serbia generally knew little about NATO, said Serbian Atlantic Council Executive Director Tijana Andric. Young people for EU, against NATO “For example, when asked why they should enter the EU, they said for better living standards. Those who supported entering NATO said the same thing,” Andric said. “I don’t think a distinction should be made between these things, especially if we see that 70 percent of the standards we have to meet for joining the EU overlap with certain NATO standards,” she said. “Also, when we asked why they were against NATO, they reacted more emotionally than rationally, which is logical given what happened in the past. They mentioned the bombing and the unresolved question of Kosovo,” Andric said.
