Interior Minister and First Deputy PM Ivica Dacic says that keeping Serbia's unity is a national interests. Regionalization, the leader of the ruling Socialists (SPS) told a party convention in Zemun on Saturday, is acceptable only under the condition that it is not breaking up the country. Dacic in new Vojvodina statute comment "It is our national interest to preserve the unity of Serbia. Yes to decentralization, but it is only a unified and strong Serbia that can guarantee the survival of the Serb nation and state," he said. Dacic repeated that the SPS-led pre-election coalition, consisting of PUPS and JS, would not vote in favor of the draft Vojvodina statute once it reaches parliament, "nor for any other document that would rip Serbia apart". "We can accept only what's in the framework of the Serb Constitution. Autonomy, yes, but a state within a state, never again," he told the gathering. According to him, "today, Kosovo and some other areas that 50 years ago embarked on the road of regionalization are trying to impose illegal secession". Dacic stressed that while the country needed to be regionalized the best model had to be found that would lead to a transfer of jurisdiction to local self-governments, but in such a way that this transfer would never break up the unity of the state.
