Serbian and Montenegrin JMs Snezana Malovic and Miras Radovic have signed a memorandum on cooperation and three other documents in Podgorica today. The documents are aimed at promoting cooperation between the two countries’ judicial organs and streamlining the international legal aid procedure, the ministers underlined. Serbia, Montengro sign justice agreement Three agreements were signed in the sphere of international legal aid: on legal aid in civil and criminal matters, mutual application of judicial rulings in criminal proceedings, and the extradition of suspects and sentenced persons. The ministers said that the agreements would enable better protection of the rights and interests of citizens and legal entities in Serbia and Montenegro and a more efficient fight against organized crime. Malovic and Radovic said that the documents should help speed up judicial cooperation in terms of providing international legal aid between the two countries’ courts and other state organs. “I am sure that the agreements will help communication between the state bodies of the two countries free itself of excessive administrative procedures, which will lead to faster court procedures,” Radovic said. He noted that the Montenegrin Justice Ministry had had more than 6,000 cases of international legal aid in criminal and civil matters last year, and that 60 percent of those had pertained to communication with Serbia. “Because of this, the simplification of international legal aid between the two countries will surely lead to faster court procedures,” Radovic said. The Montenegrin minister added that the signing of the agreement was a result of months of talks between the two ministries’ expert teams, and that it was part of Montenegro’s continuing activities to achieve quality regional cooperation. Malovic said that she expected the agreement to enhance the efficacy of judicial systems in both countries. “Until now, in a case where there was a need for international legal aid, the judge was not able to plan a hearing in a time period of less than six months. I am convinced that it will take less than a month now,” she said. Malovic said that the signing of the agreement would act as a pointer for all other countries in the region. “I am convinced that other countries in the region will follow our lead,” the Serbian minister said.
