Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says that Serbia has met all criteria set out on its Road Map to EU visa liberalization. Dacic voiced his expectation that a decision to put Serbia on the Schengen white list would be taken by the end of this year, and implemented in 2010. Dacic: All Schengen criteria met "I believe that the question mark over the exact date of Serbia being put on the Schengen white list is less important than the progress accomplished in the process," the minister told an international conference entitled “The Vision of a European Serbia“. While presenting the work to date on meeting criteria from the Road Map to visa liberalization, he said that he expected the progress made by the Serbian government in this respect to become evident in the everyday life of Serbian citizens. Dacic pointed out that Serbia had been the first country in the region to implement a mechanism for coordinated work between ministries in the visa liberalization process, and that it had begun to assume the role of a regional leader in the struggle against organized crime. “We’re not in the European integration process because of Europe, but for ourselves, and for our state and national interests… I hope the time will come when the formation of governments in Serbia, of which parties and coalitions, will not depend on Serbia’s basic desire for European integration,” said the minister. He commended the role of NGOs in the integration process, stressing that they had made a major contribution to exerting their own form of pressure on the government so that the issue of EU integration had constantly remained at the top of the government’s political agenda. Today’s conference, organized by the European Movement, with the support of the U.S. embassy, is being attended not only by government and NGO representatives, but also officials from EU member-states and European institutions.
