The ruling coalition is debating increasing MPs’ salaries, but doing away with their lump sum payment which makes up about 40 percent of their earnings. However, the rest of the draft law in parliament is still unknown, because, according to daily Blic, the ruling coalition parties, namely the Democrats and G17 Plus, are in two minds over giving parliament decision-making autonomy or leaving it as a voting machine for daily political issues and point-scoring. “MPs in line for pay rise” “It is very important for the law to address the issue of the parliamentary budget, to open a parliamentary account, as well as introduce internal and external control,” Blic writes, quoting a foreign NGO source, who is tasked with helping MPs pass a law befitting a democratic state. However, when it comes to adopting the law in question, MPs appear uninterested. The president of a working group responsible for drafting the law in parliament, Nikola Novakovic of G17 Plus, did not send a draft of the law to his colleagues until March, even though it was completed in December. In the meantime, the working group has not convened in six months.
