Ethnic Albanian officials in southern Serbia have decided to continue working in the regional coordination center known as the Coordinating Body. But they conditioned their participation by saying that the body must begin dealing with questions of essential importance to the area. Albanians to stay in south’s coordination center? Coordination Body chief Milan Markovic said that after Tuesday’s meeting, held in Bujanovac, that he is “moderately optimistic” in relation to the situation in south Serbia. Ahead of the meeting, MP and leader of the Party of Democratic Action, Riza Halimi, said that “Albanians will reexamine further participation, because Markovic is making his role and goals set by the government program in 2001 relative.” “We have practically cleared up some dilemmas that we may have had,” Markovic said after the meeting. “I think that we understand each other perfectly. All people who work in the Coordination Body, starting with my deputy and the municipal presidents of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac have a clear idea of what it should look like,” Markovic said. “It is a fact that we probably do not share an exactly identical stance about the steps we need to take, but one thing is certain—we will continue to work in a fairly good atmosphere, in an open atmosphere,” Markovic concluded. The Coordinating Body was set up in 2005. In the wake of the 1999 war in Kosovo, the region – home to the largest ethnic Albanian population outside the province itself – saw unrest when armed Albanian groups launched attacks. An internationally brokered deal defused the crisis in 2001.
