A man who on Thursday entered the Serbian Presidency building in Belgrade armed with two hand grenades will remain detained for the next 30 days. This was decided by an on-duty judge at the 3rd Belgrade Municipal Court late on Friday. "Bomber" in custody for 30 days The suspect, Dragan Maric, will face investigation and possible charges of endangering public safety and illegal possession of weapons and explosives. If indicted and found guilty, he could face from one to six and from one to eight years in prison respectively. The Palace of Justice interview yesterday took about an hour, after which Maric was taken to a Belgrade District Prison detention cell. Maric entered the Presidency building two days ago threatening to activate the devices unless the government guaranteed him an out of court settlement in a case involving his bankrupt private company. After more than five hours, a negotiating team, which reports say was headed by Ministry of Justice State Secretary Slobodan Homen, managed to persuade him to surrender, while MUP special police safely disarmed him. Homen said the negotiations were aimed at "saving human lives". He explained that Maric, who had removed the safety pin from one of the grenades, "used only the pressure of his hand the whole time to prevent it from exploding". "The negotiations were led by the MUP team, which was tasked with relaying our messages up until the moment the weapons had been surrendered. We convinced Mr. Maric that we will listen to what he has to say, he decided to hand over the grenade, and after that we sat down and talked for almost two hours. Unfortunately, this is only one of the problems we have inherited from the miserable 1990s," said Homen. The state secretary said that he promised Maric that the public prosecutor would examine two criminal complaints he had earlier filed with the prosecution. Should those complaints prove to be founded in facts, a procedure will be started against those responsible for Maric losing his case in front of the Commerce Court.
