Provincial DS chief hopeful over statute

Chairman of the ruling Democrats (DS) in Vojvodina Dušan Elezović says the <a href="http://www.b92.net/eng/news/politics-article.php?yyyy=2009&mm=05&dd=10&nav_id=59052" class="text-link" target= "_blank">draft Vojvodina statute </a>and accompanying laws will be adopted in parliament "soon".

Chairman of the ruling Democrats (DS) in Vojvodina Dusan Elezovic says the draft Vojvodina statute and accompanying laws will be adopted in parliament "soon". "It is guarantee enough for me that these acts will be adopted soon that both President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic on several occasions repeated that the statute must be confirmed in the shortest period of time," he told today's edition of Novi Sad daily Dnevnik. Provincial DS chief hopeful over statute Elezovic rejected criticism coming from opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), who this week asked the ruling coalition how it came about that the statute has not yet been passed in parliament, despite the fact that its adoption is guaranteed by the Constitution. The DS official further described the DSS as "declared opponents of Vojvodina's autonomy" and reminded that this party "has in the past months led a campaign against the provincial statute". The draft is yet to make its way to parliament although by law the deadline for this was Dec. 31, 2008.
