According to Oliver Ivanovic, the government in Belgrade "insists" that Serbs should have a separate chain of command within the Kosovo police, KPS. His comments came as it was announced on Saturday that 11 of some 300 Kosovo Serb policemen decided to return to service. "Separate chain of command for Serbs" Now the state secretary with the Ministry of Kosovo and Metohija says this is very important as "in that case" the officers would not be part of the Kosovo Albanian institutions that have unilaterally declared independence. At the same time, Ivanovic believes that security in "isolated areas" depends precisely on whether there are Serbs in the KPS. "But this return must not happen chaotically or spontaneously. It is very important for international representatives in Kosovo and Metohija, and that it EULEX at this point, to have a careful approach, and to enable us what the Ministry for KiM [Kosovo and Metohija] is working on, and that is for the possible integration of Serbs into Kosovo police not to understate integrations into the institutions of an independent Kosovo." "In other words that separate chain of command – that, I would say, slight separation from institutions – that will enable us to work, but not to have that unpleasant feeling that we are part of institutions of an independent state," Ivanovic was quoted as saying. KPS have warned that unless they return to work from paid suspension, all 300 Serb policemen would lose their jobs by June 30.
