Eleven Serb members of the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) have returned to the unit’s ranks since a deadline was set for their return from suspension, says the KPS KPS spokesman Arben Beka said that four officers had returned to the police in Pristina, three in Gnjilane, one to the border police, and three to the civil police service. 11 Serbs return to KPS fold He said that since last February, when over 300 Serb officers were suspended, 35 had returned to the Kosovo police. Following Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence, Serb officers asked to leave the command chain and be placed within the UNMIK police’s command structure. The Kosovo Interior Ministry says that Serb officers cannot join parallel command chains. The Serb officers had their weapons and equipment confiscated, but stayed on the payroll at the government’s decision. The remaining officers have until the end of June to return, and will not receive their last month’s wages. 289 Serb officers continue to be suspended. Should they fail to return, their contracts will be terminated, and the Kosovo Interior Ministry will call a competition for new members.
