In an interview for daily Vecernji Novosti, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says that the UK strongly supports Serbia’s wish to join the EU. At the same time, Miliband pays tribute to the Serbian government for the progress that has been made along the European path. “I want to stress Great Britain’s firm support for the European perspective of the whole Western Balkan region,” he said. "UK supports Serbia's EU integration" “My personal belief, and the position of my government, is that the future stability and prosperity of all the countries in the region will be best assured through EU membership,” the foreign secretary stresses. “The truth is that the speed at which each country makes progress towards accession will depend on the individual performance of that country in meeting the conditions set by the EU,” says Miliband. He stresses that there are no fixed or specific timetable that could be applied to any country. “The principle that underpins the integrity of the enlargement process is that each country needs to move towards the EU on the basis of its credentials. I would genuinely like to see the countries in the region move quickly towards membership, but the speed and quality of reforms in each country will define the speed of progress,” said the foreign secretary.
