The Bosnian courts have ordered Branimir Glavas to be placed in extradition custody, while the prosecution has 40 days to submit documents for his extradition. According to court spokesman Manuela Hodzic, Judge Branko Peric justified his ruling, seen as a landmark decision in judicial matters between the two countries, on the suspicion that Glavas’s application for Bosnian citizenship was a ruse to evade prosecution for verdicts subsequently finding him guilty of war crimes. Glavas placed in extradition custody Glavas received Bosnian citizenship on October 22, 2008, when the case against him was already under way. His defense team has 24 hours to appeal against the decision, which will be considered by the Court of Appeal. Glavas fled to Bosnia-Hercegovina late last week, after being found guilty by the courts in Zagreb of committing war crimes against Serb civilians in Osijek during the civil war in the Nineties. His escape was made possible by the fact that he had been granted political immunity at the Croatian Democratic Union's initiative last year, which meant that he was eligible to be free on bail for the duration of the case, and was not obliged to attend sentencing. He fled to Bosnia-Hercegovina in the belief that his citizenship of that country precluded the possibility of extradition back to Croatia. At this morning’s hearing, the prosecution stated that there were sufficient grounds for Glavas to be kept in custody for another month, which was confirmed to Croatian agency Hina by Bosnian Chief Prosecutor Milorad Barasin. Glavas, who was given a 24-hour detention period after his arrest yesterday, stated in his defense that he should be released as he was a Bosnian citizen. He said that he was quite prepared to go to trial again on the same indictment that the Croatian authorities had brought against him, but adding that he was only willing to do so before “an impartial court“ like the one in Bosnia-Hercegovina, he said. The convicted war criminal, who was arrested yesterday morning in the Hercegovina town of Kupres on an international warrant issued by Croatia, was remanded in custody for 24 hours while a document check was performed. His custody period in Sarajevo had been due to expire at 08:15 CET this morning. Branimir Glavas (B92, archive)
