Serbia will always demonstrate understanding for Macedonia's national interests, says President Boris Tadic. At the same time, Belgrade expects Macedonia to show understanding for the Serbian national interests, he continued in a statement after a meeting with new Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov in Skopje on Tuesday. "Mutual understanding of national interests" Macedonia and Serbia have different views on the unilateral proclamation of the independence of Kosovo, but, following a certain standstill in the bilateral relations, Tadic said that things were once again moving in an upward trend. The Serbian president believes continuity and development are important for bilateral relations, and that, even when there are occasional periods of stagnation, it is important to see the common goal and the direction projected for the future. One issue of regional character is not a reason to suspend the development of the good relations between Macedonia and Serbia, relations that are founded on a long-term basis of equality and mutual respect, Ivanov said. Speaking about a dispute between the two countries' Christian Orthodox Churches, president Tadic said he would like this problem to be resolved as soon as possible. Serbia is a democracy and today's democracy in Serbia is not interfering in church relations, but Serbia wants this issue to be resolved as soon as possible, because the question of the church relations should not burden the relations between the two peoples, Tadic said. As the president, he said, he is providing clear incentive for this problem to be resolved. Tadic added he expects of the Macedonian citizens to understand that Serbia is not involved in the dialogue between the churches. The Serbian president said that is the only way to respect the postulates of democracy and that it is the only pathway toward membership in the European Union (EU). Ivanov concluded that the presence of the presidents of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Albania at his inauguration is a strong signal to international factors that the region is cooperating and that there is a climate of good-neighbor relations.
