The Serbs were arrested after protests held two days ago in which locals from Korminjane, Ranilug and Ropotovo blocked traffic going on the Gnjilane-Bujanovac road, demonstrating because of power cuts to their villages have. But the Serbs who were arrested after the protest near Ranilug say that they were severely beaten and subjected to psychological abuse while in custody in Kosovska Kamenica. Municipal chief Boban Jevtic says that those detained complained to him about torture. Jevtic also said that the Serbs claim they did not participate in the protest, but were arrested afterwards, when members of the KPS picked them up on local roads. Tanjug reports this Wednesday that head of the Kosovsko Pomoravlje District Dragan Nikolic said that KPS members "physically and mentally mistreated the Serbs whom they detained several days ago". Nikolic said that members of the Andrejevic family told him they were mistreated while in detention Kosovska Kamenica, including that they were beaten at the police station. Nikolic went on to say that Milivoje Maksimovic appeared in court on Tuesday evening barefoot, "as he had lost his shoes during the beating". "This is an elderly man of some 70 years, a pensioner who remained two days in jail and who presented no danger for the police. People are afraid and fear for their future," the district chief said. However, KPS regional spokesman Ismet Hasani told Tanjug on Wednesday that he is unaware about the excessive use of force against the Serbs who were held in police custody over the past few days. "We have no knowledge about this, and the very fact that EULEX officers were present there rises doubts over individual claims that something illegal had really taken place. If anyone had exceeded their powers, then the corresponding disciplinary measures will be implemented against such persons," Hasani said.
