The EU and UN have dropped an inquiry into alleged large-scale fraud and corruption linked to EUR 70mn that Brussels sent to Kosovo, writes the Daily Telegraph. The London daily states that evidence existed of theft, bribery and breaches of tender regulations in activities financed by the EU and implemented by the UN between 1999 and 2008. "Kosovo funds corruption inquiry to be dropped" EU funds destined for the province’s economic reconstruction were, the paper states, the subject of 12 criminal acts and 27 examples of “breaches of rules on the awarding of contracts and nepotism.“ The information was collected by the UN-led Investigation Task Force, whose members included officials from the EU’s anti-fraud office, OLAF. The group completed its work in June 2008, and the Telegraph has had access to an internal document stating that “ apparently no other follow up action is foreseen," in spite of the fact that UN investigators recommended a criminal investigation. The daily states that, after the province’s unilateral declaration of independence last year, UN officials concluded that they had "no means any more to monitor any of those follow-up activities."
