IMF official Alistair Thomson says that the organization will be announcing the results of the vote on Kosovo’s membership application in the coming days. Thomson confirmed that the IMF Board of Directors had held a secret ballot on the province’s membership on Tuesday, but that board members had several days to reconsider their vote and express any misgivings, if any exist. IMF vote results still secret Meanwhile, Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said that the IMF membership process was progressing smoothly. Provincial broadcaster Kosovo TV reported unofficially that 100 of the IMF’s 180 members had voted in Kosovo’s favor and that the result would be known on Friday. The Serbian leadership also responded yesterday to Kosovo’s possible accession to the world financial body. Serbian President and Prime Minister Boris Tadic and Mirko Cvetkovic said that it was vital that Kosovo was not accepted into the UN. Tadic said that there was little hope of thwarting Kosovo’s IMF membership bid, but that states only became independent and internationally recognized in the true sense of the word when they became UN members. Cvetkovic said that Serbia continued to adhere to the view that what mattered was to keep Kosovo out of the UN, and that the state would continue to pursue this goal with all diplomatic means. Pristina’s potential membership of the IMF would reopen the question of the province’s debt. According to daily Blic, Belgrade’s position on this is very delicate. The paper understands that Serbia will take no active steps to infer its willingness to relinquish the debt, as it considers the issue a matter of sovereignty, as Kosovo is still officially a part of its territory. Therefore, Blic reports, the government will first await the decision of the IMF board, though the issue is sure to crop up at the next cabinet meeting too.
