Opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica says only early elections by the end of the year can help Serbia out of the crisis. “Elections are the lesser evil and the only way to save Serbia and its citizens. The DSS is doing everything to show the public that despite the political lies and deceit of the ruling coalition, there are realistic policies, whether to maintain the country’s territorial integrity or Serbia’s economic recovery,” Kostunica told daily Dnevnik. Kostunica: Elections only salvation He said that the current situation in the country is more than worrying because the government “does not have an economic policy – only propaganda and constant false promises given to citizens.” The former prime minister for two terms mentioned the promise of EUR 1,000 of free shares, 200,000 new jobs and the announcement that Italian Fiat would invest a minimum of EUR 200mn in the Kragujevac-based Zastava automaker. “The latest news says that Fiat made a payment of EUR 1.5mn. Broken promises and deceit are also related to European integrations and a better life that was to be ushered in by the Stabilization and Association Agreement, and reach to measures being taken regarding the economic crisis,” Kostunica said. He added that “it is very dangerous that people have started to lose hope that things can improve in Serbia, that they can have better lives, while realistic policies, which take into consideration real life, could rekindle hope. That is why it is up to the DSS to show with concrete measures that it is possible.” Kostunica denied that his party did not accept the invitation of the opposition Serb Progressives (SNS) for cooperation, and said that the DSS is cooperating with the SNS, but that "cooperation always has to be based on something concrete". “Now, a good chance for concrete cooperation is presented by the proposal for the Law Jurisdiction of Vojvodina, which the DSS and New Serbia have entered into parliamentary procedures recently. Here's a chance for cooperation between the DSS and all other opposition parties that are willing to work on this important state and national issue together,” he concluded.
