Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic has commented on a proposal to reduce the number of seats in Serbia's parliament to 150 from 250. President Boris Tadic's idea is a "useful initiative that can be considered", the ruling Socialists (SPS) officials said, but pointed out that it is "not too realistic that such it could be realized this year, which is extremely difficult economy-wise". Fewer seats good idea, "but not this year" "I cannot say at this point whether the cutting down of the number of seats would be an advantage, even though there are parameters that indicate this would be so. Nevertheless, the Constitution must determine the number of seats," she said in an interview for Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti published this Sunday. Asked to comment on the fact that a two-third majority in parliament is necessary for securing any changes to the Constitution, while initial reactions by parties indicate that this would hardly be possible, Djukic-Dejanovic said it is "much easier to secure a simple majority than a two-third majority". However, "through serious work or with a different composition, it is quite possible to secure votes to change the Constitution", she said.
