The opposition has reacted sceptically to the president’s plans for Constitutional change to cut MP numbers and promote regionalization and decentralization. In an interview with daily Novosti, Boris Tadic said that election laws must be changed, along with laws for the registration and financing of political parties. Opposition scornful of Tadic plans Under the plans, the number of MPs would be cut from 250 to 150, while other regions of the country would receive a higher legal status in order to cancel out the perceived discrimination in favor of Vojvodina. However, the opposition was quick to dismiss the president’s proposal: “The president’s marketing team has again dreamt up how they’re going to put the president into the public spotlight as a man who cares about the state. I think the path for constitutional change is with both political parties and the Serbian people depending on what is being changed, and whether parliament can change that provision with a majority or whether it requires a referendum,” said Serb Progressive Party leader Tomislav Nikolic. “That’s irresponsible and dangerous talk. If it’s true that he wants to try and change the Constitution, my feeling is that dangerous things are behind this, linked to state governance, and if it’s a marketing ploy, then it’s just another in a string of Boris Tadic’s tricks,” said Dragan Sormaz of the Democratic Party of Serbia. League of Vojvodina Social Democrat leader Nenad Canak said that he did not know “whether there should be less or more MPs, but I know that parliament has to function more effectively. If the Constitution is to be changed, I don’t know if that’s the only thing that should be changed. I’m sure it’s not.” Tadic’s announcement of Constitutional change comes at a time when the governing majority in parliament is barely sustainable, with only 127 MPs. With the support of two-thirds of MPs needed to render changes to the Constitution, the only course available would seem to be new elections or a consensus within the current parliament.
