Serbia expect no new recognitions of Kosovo, nor the province’s presence or membership in international organizations, says Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. Jeremic said that a certain number of countries spearheaded by Saudi Arabia were trying to “lobby a certain number of recognitions of Kosovo as an independent state.“ Jeremic: Support for Serbian policy However, he added that the Serbian delegation was continuing its activities to prevent any further recognitions. “We have the backing of a signifcant number of countries, and 118 countries are present here at the highest level, therefore two-thirds of the UN’s member-states. We’re fighting to prevent any new recognitions of Kosovo, even though certain exceptionally powerful states are lobbying precisely for that,“ the minister said. He said that one of the key themes of the conference was the economic crisis and the ways in which Non-Aligned Movement member states and observer states like Serbia “can help each other in a bilateral sense.” “Our country once had an exceedingly good position in a large number of these countries that we neglected, and now we’re opening them up again. Those 118 states are now far more powerful countries in an economic sense than they were before, which is an economic opportunity for us,” Jeremic explained. The minister added that he would be using his address to the official plenary to present Belgrade’s candidacy for holding the Non-Aligned Movement’s conference in 2011 in what will be the 50th anniversary of organization’s inception.
