The Democratic Party (DS) denied the claims of disgraced Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic that NIS and the Vojvodina Capital Investments Fund finance the party. DS spokeswoman Jelena Trivan told B92 that public companies were not allowed to finance parties in any way, adding that the DS was calling for a budget inspection to confirm whether these companies had transferred any money to the DS. DS denies former mayor’s funding claims She added that it was natural for someone accused of abuse of office to use everything he could for his defense, that this was what all suspects did, and that it was also expected that he would try and use the party. Trivan said that it was clear that recent events were part of an ongoing campaign against the DS. Asked who was behind this campaign, she said that this could be discussed, but that were politicians who had publicly said that they had no intention of publishing reports on behalf of their parties or behaving in the way the DS works. Trivan stressed that those who were hiding their funding sources from the public were not under investigation by journalists and that “this has the hallmarks of a campaign.”
