Zrenjanin mayor dismissed

Zrenjanin's municipal assembly has approved the dismissal of Mayor Goran Knezevic, accused of organized crime, with the votes of 40 ruling coalition members. Knezevic has been earmarked as the mastermind of a group accused of embezzling over EUR 360,000, and defrauding the local Zrenjanin budget to the tune of almost EUR 1.6mn. Zrenjanin mayor dismissed The motion for the mayor’s dismissal was submitted by the ruling coalition with the signatures of 40 councilors on the grounds that “as the mayor has been prevented from discharging his duties for seven months it is necessary to launch an initiative for his dismissal and the election of a new mayor.“ The ruling coalition, made up of the Democratic Party, the League of Vojvodina Social Democrats and the Union of Vojvodina Hungarians, G17 Plus and the Equality Movement, holds 41 of the total 67 seats in the assembly. Under the local self-government act, the new mayor chooses the members of the Town Council, and, according to Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Marton, the line-up of that executive body has already been agreed, following a coalition meeting.
