Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said late on Friday that the Kosovo hearings and arguments at the ICJ will be "the process of the century". A resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly last fall ordered the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to provide an advisory opinion on whether the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral proclamation of independence in February 2008 was in line with international law. Jeremic: Process of century at ICJ Yesterday at The Hague, Serbia submitted its motion in the case, as did the Kosovo Albanian leadership. Also on Friday, Romania and Russia announced officially that written statements in favor of Belgrade's case had been sent to the court. Jeremic commented by telling state broadcaster RTS that this will be the first time in history that an act of secession is being considered from the point of view of international law. "Self-determination will be measured against the right to preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of an internationally recognized and sovereign state," said the minister. He also stated that the first hearing is expected in December, while the ruling should come after the first half of 2010. "The ruling will certainly have the nature of setting a precedent and I am absolutely convinced that the court will rule in line with international law." Jeremic revealed that more than 30 countries will take part in the process, with "some of the most influential", such as China, Russia, Brazil, Spain, supporting Serbia. "Brazil decided yesterday, after my talks with the foreign minister of that country, to back Serbia's position," Jeremic said, and added that Argentina, Cyprus, Spain, Romania, Slovakia, Egypt, Libya, Iran, Azerbaijan and some other countries have also presented their advisory opinions to the ICJ in which they back Serbia. In the meantime, the foreign minister explained, Belgrade will continue to fight to preserve the country's integrity. "Ours is a peace-loving, democratic country, and we have every right to use legal, peaceful and democratic means to fight for our sovereignty," Jeremic concluded.
