EP rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin has commended Serbia for progress in judicial reform, combating organized crime and cooperation with the Hague. Speaking in Ljubljana today after a recent visit to Serbia, Kacin said that Serbia was meeting its Road Map commitments for liberalizing the visa regime with the EU very successfully, which was why, he predicted, Serbia would be the first country in the region to receive visa-free travel. "Rave reviews from EP rapporteur" The European Parliament (EP) rapporteur reserved special praise for the grass-roots changes that were taking place within the justice system, stating that in this field, Serbia had made greater progress than Croatia. He also applauded the work of the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution, stating that it was fully cooperating with the Hague Tribunal, which was why it was unencumbered by the problems affecting Croatia, whose EU integration was recently forestalled over its failure to supply the Hague with key documentation. “Serbia’s problem is the absence of [Ratko] Mladic and [Goran] Hadzic,“ said Kacin, adding that the Stabilization and Association Agreement would be unfrozen the moment Mladic was extradited to the Hague. During his visit to Serbia, the rapporteur also visited Novi Pazar, “so as not everything should happen in Belgrade and Novi Sad, but also in the least developed, south part of Serbia, at the border, where crime and corruption is flourishing,“ and where, according to him, the need for European funds and Serbia’s speedy regionalization was plain to see. While in Novi Pazar, he also made a visit to Kosovo to, as he put it, “support and encourage that section of the Serb population in Kosovo, who, instead of isolation, has chosen cooperation and participation,“ as well as to meet with the Kosovo assembly speaker. In Kosovo, Kacin spoke with officials of the Serb Independent Liberal Party of Kosovo, which has representives in the Pristina assembly and two ministers in the provincial government. The rapporteur said that “whatever anyone thinks about the state of Kosovo, progress and investment growth is visible there.“ He added that U.S. President Barack Obama’s upcoming appointment of an envoy to the Western Balkans would be very important for Kosovo, “where the people simply adore the U.S.“ Jelko Kacin (FoNet, archive)
