Karadžić wants kidnapping charge dropped

Radovan Karadzic has asked the Hague Tribunal to remove a charge of kidnapping, allegedly committed between May and June 1995, from his indictment. The Hague said that the former Bosnian Serb leader had asked for the charge to be removed because it was not within the Tribunal’s jurisdiction. In count 11 of the indictment, it states that Karadzic participated in a joint criminal enterprise and took UN officials hostage in order to dissuade NATO from launching air strikes on Bosnian Serb military targets. From May 26 to June 19, 1995, the Bosnian Serb forces took more than 200 peacekeepers and UN military observers hostage at various locations, according to the indictment. The indictment adds that they were freed in phases from June 3-19, 1995. The former Republic of Srpska president is accused of masterminding atrocities throughout the war in Bosnia in1992-95, including ethnic cleansing campaigns, the siege of Sarajevo, and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. Karadzic’s next trial hearing is scheduled for July 20, after which the trial is expected to begin.
