A package of welfare measures for the socially marginalized, in particular Roma, is due to be adopted on May 1, says Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic. “I expect the funds for this to be secured at the budget review, through the savings measures that the government presented yesterday,“ Ljajic told a Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Improving the Plight of Roma. The minister said that there were also plans to raise child benefit pay-outs twice a year, as well as subsidies for scholarships for the neediest children, including Roma in particular. “EUR 32.1mn will be allocated for apprenticeships and those engaged in public works,“ said Ljajic. UN Coordinator for Serbia Lennart Kotsalainen welcomed the government’s efforts to improve the plight of Roma, stating that the UN would continue to support Serbia in these endeavors. UN Coordinator for Serbia Lennart Kotsalainen welcomed the government’s efforts to improve the plight of Roma, stating that the UN would continue to support Serbia in these endeavors.

He called on international donors to help Serbia solve the problems of the country’s biggest national minority.
