The opposition have lambasted the government’s latest savings measures, accusing it of resorting to populism in order to dodge the real problems. Liberal Democratic Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic said that the new measures were “half-baked“ and showed that the government was panicking, instead of opting for far-reaching and essential changes. Opposition tears into govt. economic measures “From a stage where we were promised that the crisis would pass us by or even benefit us, we’ve now been brought into a situation where everyone’s worst fears are coming true through the government’s selective and half-baked measures,“ said Jovanovic in a written statement. “Once again, the government has chosen measures that they believe will do the least harm to their opinion poll ratings. The only problem is that society, the public and the economy can no longer withstand this and that the price of this policy will be huge for the government, but even harder for the citizens,“ he said. New Serbia leader Velimir Ilic said that the government should change its course and start resolving the major problems linked to the economic crisis in parliament. He told reporters that the government was continuing to sidestep debates of the main problems in parliament. “The Serbian parliament has to be a place where very important problems for Serbia’s citizens are addressed. Serbia is in a very bad way, and a particular problem is unemployment, then the difficult political situation in certain towns. Bor is teetering on the very brink, as are Majdanpek and Leskovac,“ Ilic said. “The government is running away from the real problems. I can’t fathom why we’re now adopting ecological laws that are the highest standards in Europe, while, for example, 30 percent of Belgraders don’t have sewage,“ he said. The Serb Radical Party (SRS) announced today that the publication of the salaries of directors in the public companies had confirmed what the Radicals had constantly been highlighting—that the government’s irrational spending of budget funds was driving the country into an even deeper economic crisis. “Government irresponsibility is not only visible in the scandalously high salaries of public company directors, but in the endless spread of public administration,“ they said. The SRS wants the government “to publish a list of expenses pertaining to travel, representation, and short-term contracts concluded by all ministries, agencies and departments,“ so that the public can see who spends most and who needs to make cutbacks.
