Roma from a makeshift community in New Belgrade have spent their 4th night in the open, with the majority refusing accommodation in a refuge for the homeless. After the Center for Social Work took a register, the Roma rejected the local authorities’ offer for children, the elderly and infirm to be housed in temporary accommodation until their housing status is resolved. Roma spend fourth night in open Some of those living under the Gazela bridge did however take up the offer. Three mothers with five children from under the Gazela agreed to take up refuge at the Drinka Pavlovic Children’s Home in Senjak, which is also awaiting the arrival of a single father of four children. Unlike them, the Roma from Block 67, whose huts were demolished last week, have turned down the city’s offer, stating that their families risked being broken up, as the city had no solution for able men. “The real solution is for them to give us something, either containers or some kind of accommodation. Or to give us some plot of land. We don’t want anything, not even flats. We don’t want villas, just to have something for these children,” said one of the Block 67 residents. They said that they did not know whether they would continue blocking streets, but that their protest would definitely continue. There are currently entire families sleeping under tents, warming themselves by burning firewood. If it rains, they will sleep in vans given to them by friends. Speaking to B92, Deputy Human and Minority Rights Minister Petar Antic said that the government would adopt a draft strategy, drawn up five years ago, very soon.
