Roma from New Belgrade spent another night outdoors, waiting to go to the shelter which the city has promised them. Those who lived in the illegal Roma settlement in New Belgrade Block 67 which was demolished, are still living outside, at least until this afternoon, when mothers with small children and the elderly will be able to go to the shelter which the city of Belgrade has secured for them. Roma spend another night outdoors The UNHCR offered the people mattresses and blankets last night, while citizens and NGOs came by with food. State Secretary with the Human and Minority Rights Ministey Marko Karadzic told B92 that there will be a new meeting held today in search of a solution. “There will be talks during the day for a new location for putting up [housing] containers for these people who have no roof over their heads. The city proposes several solution which would be permanent,” Karadzic said. “I am pleased, and we will cooperate with the city, the ministry and international organizations, to systematically work on solving this problem in the future,” he added. Karadzic also stated that he regrets the fact that the locals from the Belgrade suburb of Boljevci did not understand the situation of the Roma. The Boljevci residents over the weekend blocked attempts to temporarily settle the Roma in their midst. “It is human to help everyone who is in trouble in accordance with our abilities,” Karadzic said. The fate of the Roma from New Belgrade remains unsolved, several days before International Roma Day, marked on April 7.
