President Boris Tadic said Sunday that preserving national identity and tradition is the basis for Serbia's future. “There will be no EU accession without our national identity, and there is no point of existence without identity. Preserving national identity does not solely imply keeping memory alive, but also defining new guidelines for building the future,” Tadic said in Valjevo, in the west of the country, where he attended a folklore festival. "Serbia to preserve national identity" According to Tadic, culture represents a bridge over state borders and that is how Serbia, by building its identity, will contribute to the development of the modern multicultural world. More than a hundred folklore companies, with 10,000 participants performed in this year's festival, under the sponsorship of the president. While in the city, which has seen a string of criminal underworld killings and other grave felonies recently, Tadic stated that Serbia will have to decisively confront all types of organized crime, in order to be able to guarantee secure life to the citizens. "As the Serbian president, not only will I lend the greatest possible support to such action, but I will also direct all of my personal energy towards the final elimination of the links between the crime and the state," he said.
