EP Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin supports calls to scrap the visa regime with Serbia this year and strongly opposes postponing further EU enlargement. Kacin met with Interior Minister Ivica Dacic in Brussels yesterday, where the two discussed progress in fulfilling the conditions that would allow Serbian citizens to travel to the EU visa-free. Regarding the current crisis, Kacin said that it was very important to provide Serbia with all the instruments and assets for development and economic assistance, in order to help her weather the crisis as soon and as painlessly as possible. Kacin said that he strongly opposed the view of certain Western politicians, who are publicly pushing for a postponement in the European Union enlargement process, leaving the door open only to Croatia. “Every country must be evaluated on its individual results and progress,” Kacin said. He added that Macedonia, as a candidate for EU membership, deserved to receive a date for beginning negotiations, while the other countries should receive EU candidate status as soon as they fulfilled all the conditions.
