Serbia has the worst relations with NATO out of all the countries in South-East Europe, says Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. Sutanovac said that the victims must not be forgotten, but that it was necessary to work together with NATO as this was in Serbia and NATO’s mutual interest. Serbia-NATO relations ten years on He said that he saw no reason why the issue of Serbia joining NATO was even being discussed “when no-one has even invited us to join.“ The minister said that Serbia, despite being a member of the Partnership for Peace program, was the only country not to have opened an office in Brussels, expressing his expectation that this would happen later in the year. “Regardless of our poor memory, we must build a future and turn towards the future not only for the sake of history, but for the younger generations that are coming,“ Sutanovac said. One year after entering the Partnership for Peace in December 2007, the Serbian parliament adopted a declaration of military neutrality. Other than the bombing, relations between Serbia and NATO have been further strained by the Alliance’s decision to equip and train the Kosovo Security Forces, which Serbia considers a paramilitary formation.
