U.S. ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter hopes that there will never be any repeat of the problems that led to the NATO air strikes on Serbia in 1999.

U.S. ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter hopes that there will never be any repeat of the problems that led to the NATO air strikes on Serbia in 1999. Speaking yesterday on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the start of the operation, Munter said that he felt sorry for the human victims and the material destruction. Munter “sorry for victims of NATO air strikes" “We think that it is best, in facing up to what has happened over the last 20 years in the former Yugoslavia, to create a successful Serbia over the next 20 years,” the ambassador told journalists in Pancevo. He added that the American embassy in Belgrade was dedicated to Serbia’s ecological goals and plans to clean up the environment. “We are actively working with many non-governmental organizations, student groups and local authorities to help Serbia clean up its environment. The activism of all these groups is a key aspect for success,” Munter said. After a visit to the Petrohemija company and the Ponjavica nature park near Pancevo on Thursday, the ambassador said that he was aware of the threats to the environment in this region because of the chemical factory. He said that adoption of new laws on ecology would enable the government to help improve the quality of life in the town. Munter, who was in Pancevo to promote cooperation for improving the ecological situation in the town, met with Mayor Vesna Martinovic and other Pancevo government officials.
