Serbia will call on Croatia to drop its lawsuit against Belgrade for genocide, in which case Serbia will drop its own counter-action, says PM Mirko Cvetkovic. Ahead of his first meeting with Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in Belgrade on Friday, Cvetkovic said that there were open issues between the two countries that were impeding full progress in establishing an important regional partnership. PM to call on Croatia to drop suit “Croatia and Serbia are important states in the Western Balkans, and the speed of the entire region’s EU integration, which is the strategic goal of both countries, hinges in great part on our cooperation,” said the prime minister. “We’ll call on Croatia to withdraw its suit against Serbia for genocide from procedure. In that event, Serbia would be prepared to withdraw its own counter-suit,” he explained. Cvetkovic said that this was an opportunity to normalize relations between the two countries for the long-term and show that they had, as neighbors, “removed an obstacle inherited from the recent past and imposed for political motives.“ Noting that another important open issue was that of the return and treatment of Serb refugees from Croatia, the minister said that Serbia was very eager to see the return of all refugees, as well as the return or compensation of all property seized from them in a just manner, adding that they should be offered the same conditions as all other Croatian citizens. He said that Serbia was in favor of scrapping the artificially created trade imbalance and deficit that now exists, advocating free circulation of goods and capital. “What’s of paramount importance is that Serbian companies should be offered the same conditions for doing business and entering the market as Croatian companies have in Serbia,“ said Cvetkovic, adding that the two countries had to cooperate in the economic domain. “These are difficult economic times for the whole world, and for our region too. For precisely this reason, we have to work together in the economic sphere. However, that cooperation has to be between equals, on level and just market conditions,” he stressed.
