Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini says that the time is ripe for Serbia to continue its European integration process. “Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal still remains an obstacle. I am convinced that we will overcome this problem. Serbia must progress towards Europe without further delay,” Frattini told daily Vecernje Novosti. Rome: Serbia is EU-bound He said that “Italy believes that it is time to continue Serbia’s European integration process” and that his country “supports the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement and the ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU.” The minister said that the only condition was cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and, as far as everything else was concerned, Belgrade must continue to work intensively with Brussels, achieving the expected results in reforms, as was the case with countries that have already become EU member-states, Frattini said. The minister said that Italy backed Serbia’s application for candidate status, and that he hoped that “this deserved goal will be reached soon.” He said that Italy also supported Serbia’s desire to get on the Schengen white list by 2009. “I personally introduced the road map for Serbia while I was vice president of the European Commission,” Frattini said. The minister said that Fiat’s management had told him that the project with the Zastava factory in Kragujevac was still on. He said that he hoped that the example of Fiat would be followed by others in the sectors of spare parts production, as well as other fields, such as energy, agriculture and manufacturing as a whole.
