EULEX courts have delivered their first ruling and sentenced Albanian Gani Gashi to 17 years in prison for war crimes. This is the first ruling since the EULEX mission’s work began in Kosovo. The Trial Chamber, led by EULEX representatives, convicted Gashi of murdering a Kosovo Albanian and injuring another, according to Slovenian media. EULEX court delivers first verdict The crimes were committed in 1998 when Gashi killed one person with a bullet to the back and injured another during his attempt to flee a firefight between the Kosovo Liberation Army and Serbian forces. This was the first trial in which Kosovo courts cooperated with the EULEX civilian mission, most of whom are police and judges, whose aim is to help establish the rule of law in the province.
