NATO is looking to start cutting its contingent in Kosovo over the next year, says KFOR Commander Giuseppe Emilio Gay. Gay told the AP agency that NATO had “no need to keep 15,000 people there (in Kosovo).” Not divulging any details, he said that he expected troop cuts to take place by the end of this year or the start of next year. KFOR to begin troop cuts He explained that the reductions would be conducted gradually to avoid any “security pockets,” and would not be tied to NATO missions in other regions like Afghanistan. NATO originally deployed 50,000 troops to Kosovo when it took control of the province following the 78-day airstrikes on Serbia in 1999. Gay said that NATO peacekeeping forces under his control were “capable of dealing with any kinds of threat.” “We maintain a high presence throughout Kosovo. We have a good number, a huge amount of boots on the ground, everywhere in Kosovo,” he stressed.
