The District Court investigative judge in Gornji Milanovac has ordered three workers remanded to custody for illegal transport and storage of dangerous waste. A 30 day jail term was ordered for Zarko P. (54), manager for environmental protection at Zvezda Helios, a paint-producing factory in that town. Details emerge in carcinogenic waste scandal Former workers, now truck drivers, Miroslav L. (55) and Rodoljub L. (56) will also remain in prison for the next month pending the investigation. Over the last two years they transported barrels and canisters of poisonous carcinogenic materials to villages in the Gruza region in central Serbia, storing it in fields villagers use. According to the investigative judge, Zarko P. confessed after questioning that the Zvezda Helios management did not know that the waste was being taken to the villages near Gornji Milanovac, though written orders state that the Kragujevac-bound transport was to be at the expense of the factory. Criminal proceedings were brought against Goran M. and Sasa J. of Donja Vrbava and Radisa C. of Gornji Milanovac for storing the waste on their property. District Public Prosecutor Bisenija Lazarevic, speaking to Beta news agency, denied claims made by state environmental protection inspectors that the prosecution had refused to bring proceedings against Zvezda Helios on Feb. 1, 2008. She explained that the prosecution does not take action in economic cases, but rather that this is a job for the District Public Prosecution in Cacak, where the Trade Court has its headquarters. Slovenian Helios Group in 2003 bought a majority stake in Zvezda Helios. Today, the Slovenian company distanced itself from allegations that its Serbian operation was polluting the environment with dangerous waste. The company also stated in Ljubljana that "media in Serbia are going too far in reporting about an environmental disaster in Sumadija [central Serbia]". But at the same time, Helios said that "indivuduals, not the company", should be blamed for the pollution.
