The realization of the first phase of a project for the return of Serbs to Kosovo was announced in Klina. Approximately ten houses are due to be built in the next few months in the village of Rudice, Klina, for the same number of Serb families, and one Albanian family. Some Serbs return to Kosovo villages Preparations for living conditions and building the house for the ten Serb families will be led by the UN Development Program (UNDP). Representatives of the organization signed an agreement for the return of Serbs to Rudice with the British embassy, the Klina district, and the Ministry for Community and Return in the Kosovo Albanian government. The project costs EUR 245,880 and is financed by the British government. Deputy Head of the UK mission in Kosovo Anna Jackson said signing the agreement opens the first phase of return to Rudice. The Klina district has been actively included in assisting the return of other group organizations, first and foremost in the villages of Vidanje, Drsik, Klinavac and Berkovo. Jackson called Klina an example of a district in Kosovo which is engaged in the successful return of displaced persons. From 1999 until now 5 percent of displaced persons have returned to Klina, said Milorad Sarkovic, head of the Community Office in district of Klina, speaking to B92. Work in the first phase of the return of displaced persons to the village of Rudice encompasses infrastructure, followed by the beginning of the house-building process. The project is focused on offering housing assistance. That, however, is not enough for those returning, says Sarkovic. More villages in Klina have seen the return of about 900 Serbs until now, but only half of them in fact remained to live in this part of Kosovo. UNHCR data shows that some 230,000 Serbs in Kosovo were driven out of their homes after the 1999 war in the province.
