The government yesterday asked for an extraordinary session of parliament, scheduled for Monday, to be delayed. MPs were to debate 15 laws related to environmental protection, and ratify a number of international agreements from this sector. The laws are also described as necessary for speeding up of EU integrations. Parliament session postponed, reasons unclear The Serbian lawmakers will instead meet in a regular session in March. And while Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic told B92 she was unaware of the motives behind the delay, adding there likely are "objective reasons for it", opposition Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP) leader and MP Cedomir Jovanovic said the news is disappointing. Djukic-Dejanovic said that the cabinet ministers themselves should be asked for the reasons for their decision. Unofficially, it was heard that the session was postponed at the request of the opposition which wanted more time to study the drafts. However, according to Jovanovic, who chairs parliament's Committee for Environmental Protection, the opposition "had nothing to do with it". The real reason, he said, was the ruling coalition's inability to secure the presence of a sufficient number of MPs. The agenda for the session was to be determined next week, with one of the likely items being a proposal to change the Law on Excises.
