Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) senior official Dusan Bajatovic has dismissed claims that the proposed Vojvodina Statute will divide Serbia. He believes that there is no need for the Vojvodina Statute to return to the provincial assembly for a second reading as it has already been adopted. SPS: Statute doesn’t divide Serbia “In Serbia there are still differing opinions about the Vojvodina Statute, but what is certain is that we should not allow the Statute to be equated with attempts to divide Serbia,” said Bajatovic last night at an SPS city board meeting in Valjevo. “It’s true that there are different approaches to this problem, but the general view remains: Vojvodina autonomy—yes, but endangering Serbia—no,” he added. Bajatovic said that the Statute was now under the jurisdiction of the national parliament, but that, in compliance with the Serbian Constitution, the Constitutional Court could make amendments to it in the event of any injustices. He said that the SPS would hold a congress by the end of the year, at which its reformist course would be confirmed and a new program adopted. Dusan Bajatovic (Tanjug)
