Former Serbian Army (VS) Chief-of-Staff Zdravko Ponos could become a presidential adviser, according to daily Vecernje Novosti. Quoting “well-informed sources,” the daily states that Ponos is preparing to become a security adviser in President Boris Tadic’s cabinet. Ponos to become Tadic adviser? Ponos, who was dismissed from the position on December 30, 2008, after a bust-up with Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, has not been appointed to a new position as yet. According to the daily, this issue will be tackled once the lieutenant-general returns from his vacation. The source says that Ponos turned down the post of Serbia’s envoy to NATO in Brussels, and is considering retiring from the army so that he can take up the position of presidential adviser as a civilian. The daily states that Ponos asked to be appointed an adviser as an active soldier, but this request was dismissed out of hand. According to the daily, there are three potential candidates to take over the position of military chief-of-staff: Acting Chief-of-Staff Miloje Miletic, Air Force Commander Dragan Katanic and senior VS official Dragan Kolundzija.
