Optimism over Serbia-Iraq defense ties

Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac spoke to journalists in Belgrade on Friday, a day after his official visit to Iraq. Sutanovac said that he expected a continuation of the Serbian-Iraqi cooperation in defense, internal affairs, infrastructure and civilian projects sectors. Optimism over Serbia-Iraq defense ties The minister said that during his visit to Baghdad he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to discuss possibilities for cooperation in these fields, and that he learned that the Iraqi government was very satisfied with the realization of a contract on military cooperation, which had been signed by the two defense ministries in 2008. Sutanovac told reporters that he expected that the Iraqi PM would accept an invitation to visit Belgrade, "to open a very serious cooperation dialogue". Serbia and Iraq have a weapons and military equipment deal underway worth USD 235mn. Al-Maliki's cabinet announced after the meetings that the discussions with Sutanovac focused on finding mechanisms to cooperate on supplying the Iraqi army and police with weapons. Sutanovac also, it was announced, offered to accept Iraqi medics and military cadets into Serbia's military schools. The MoD website also says that the Iraqis were "fascinated" with the latest Jugoimport SDPR product, armored multipurpose vehicle Lazar, and that they expressed interest in acquiring Serbian training aircraft Lasta, and sending their personnel to Serbia for air force training.
