No-one was reported injured last night when unknown assailants shelled the Kosovo Security Forces' (KSB) barracks near Pec. A shell was launched at the barracks, near the football stadium in the town, just before 20:00 CET from, it is suspected, a hand-held grenade launcher, said Kosovo Police Service (KPS) spokesman Veton Elshani. KSB barracks come under attack According to the spokesman, the grenade struck the roof of one of the buildings within the barrack grounds, causing minor material damage. For the time being, it is still not clear what the motive for the attack was or who was responsible. The attack comes only two days after the official formation of the KSB. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the attack was carried out by members of the now defunct Kosovo Protection Corps, unhappy with the entry conditions for the new forces. Special police conducted an investigation last night and an inquiry has been launched. Meanwhile, former members of the Kosovo Protection Corps are protesting today in front of the Kosovo assembly today at not being allowed to join the KSB. They are threatening to cause big problems in Kosovo if measures are not taken to allow them to join the security forces. They say that the selection criteria have been ignored, that there has been manipulation, and that they will destabilize the situation in Kosovo if they are not allowed to join the KSB. KSB Commander Sulejman Selimi said that the forces want to be a part of NATO and will open their doors to one and all, regardless of ethnicity, religion and sex. “NATO ‘s been following this process since the outset. There was a permanent interest in NATO to help the KSB, and that cooperation will continue. We are happy that we can get NATO’s experience in training, equipment and in infrastructure,” Selimi told Deutsche Welle. He said that the Kosovo Serbs were welcome in the KSB. “We have a list of KSB members. That list contains a lot of minorities, even some members of the Serb community. This is a good thing, and I believe that their numbers will increase in future,” Selimi said. He did not wish to comment on Serbian President Boris Tadic’s call for the KSB to be dissolved. “I do not want to comment on the statements of others on Kosovo or the KSB …We are a new state and we are functioning as a state. You know that Serbia is against Kosovo independence and against everything positive in Kosovo. But, we will prove that the KSB and the state of Kosovo will be prosperous,” he said.
