Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says that once someone is nominated to be an ambassador abroad, they lose the right to criticize state policy in public. ”Whoever ignores that principle is no longer in the running to work as a Serbian ambassador,” Jeremic said. Jeremic: Ambassadors can’t be critics “The responsibility of naming an ambassador and withdrawing a proposal is mine alone, not President Boris Tadic’s,” Jeremic said. Asked who was responsible for withdrawing the proposal to appoint the former editor-in-chief of daily Politika, Ljiljana Smajlovic, as ambassador to Canada, Jeremic said that under the law, ministers and state officials were not allowed to speak about the appointment and nomination of ambassadors and candidates in public. “There were many unhelpful comments in public,” Jeremic said, reiterating that the appointment of ambassadors was the exclusive responsibility of the Foreign Ministry. Smajlovic told B92 yesterday that the Foreign Ministry had said that it had approved her nomination for the post of Serbian ambassador to Canada, but that she had unofficially found out that the entire process had been terminated at Tadic’s request.
