Ratko Mladic's network of aides is growing smaller and weaker, head of the National Council for Hague Cooperation Rasim Ljajic says. This, Ljajic suggested on Tuesday, is partly because the Hague Tribunal indictee has been intimidating and threatening his helpers. "Number of Mladic helpers decreasing" In an interview with Reuters, he said that Mladic had even threatened the children of his aides, so as to make sure no one betrayed him. "In the period before 2002, when he used military facilities as hideouts, once he lined up all the officers helping him, pointed a finger at them and said that even their grandchildren would be hurt if they dared give away information on his whereabouts," Ljajic said. Ljajic, who is also the labor and social policy minister, said that the Serbian authorities now knew more about Mladic's location than six months ago. "Mladic trusts only a small number of people. He is aware that a larger number of people in his network of aides would only make the job easier for our services," Ljajic said. He also said that the authorized services had managed to retrace Mladic's steps until spring 2006. According to Ljajic, Serbian security services have been working day and night to locate Mladic, avoiding publicity in the process. "I cannot believe those efforts will remain fruitless. The latest action of locating Mladic was carried out in Belgrade three or four days ago," he said. Ljajic went on to say that the information provided by citizens about Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic over a special telephone line was mostly useless. "We have received calls from several people who either wanted to make a joke or point us in the wrong direction," Ljajic added. Speaking of the other fugitive from the Hague tribunal, Goran Hadzic, the minister said he did not know where Hadzic was, but that "information that he has been hiding in three countries other than Serbia is being checked."
